DO

DO Make a comic book
BY Melanie Lewis (www.pscomics.com)

1. Brainstorm ideas
2. Write a rough script with thumbnails
3. Edit
4. Figure out the format of the comic -- will it fit in a standard size comic book, will it be a standalone story, what size/proportion will the panels be (if there are panels)?
5. Ink the panel borders at least double the size of what the final product will be. It's also helpful to make a little mini-mock-up of what the final product will look like.
6. Pencil the comic, including lettering (I like to search Google images if I am having trouble picturing the details of an object, place, etc)
7. Ink the comic (black micron pens and, for the more advanced, india ink and paintbrush work well -- sharpies and regular markers should be avoided because they bleed and ballpoint pens should be avoided because they don't photocopy well)
8. Erase the pencil
9. Scan the pages and set up for print (or, if you're old school, go to Kinko's and shrink/cut & paste layout)
10. Design and produce a cover -- think about whether or not it will be screen-printed, photocopied, what kind of paper stock/color, etc.
11. Print/photocopy
12. Assemble
13. Distribute
