depression

I think we've all been at a point in our lives when we think the same type of things. What is the point of life? Why bother? It all seems so pointless and I feel so insignificant.

Many people find their escape in religion. It gives us a purpose. We try to live wholesome lives and have good morals so that when we die we will be able to experience the everlasting joy and paradise that is heaven. That's why we can become so depressed if we start to question our faith.

My mother is a Seventh-day Adventist and my dad is an atheist so I didn't have a normal religious upbringing. I sort of see religions of today the way society views religions of the past. We call the ancient roman, greek, viking, mayan, and other religions mythologies. The point is to not focus on wether these religions are actually true or not but to focus on the effects they have. If you have complete faith in your religion and that belief makes you a better and happier person, what's wrong with that?

Of course if you sit around and do nothing you will be unsatisfied with life. Even if you think you are happy sitting at home watching television or playing video games there is still a part of you that realizes how empty those things are.

I personally have found my own happiness through being with friends, learning new things, and helping people. Going to concerts, the beach, or other events with friends builds memories that you can remember later when you are lonely and smile. I found out that I was interested in web design so I bought some books and thought myself html. I wanted to know how to skateboard so I borrowed one from my friend and almost broke my neck. I started to feel self-conscious so began a exercise regiment. I guess you could say it's kind of selfish but I also do things just to make myself feel like a good person. I give blood, walk for causes, donate to charities, and help anyone whenever possible. Due to fairy tales and movies we are led to believe that we will find happiness in a girlfriend of boyfriend. Early on I adopted the truth that "happiness is not a girl" and I don't think many people realize that. All your problems won't magically disappear just because you get a girlfriend. In fact, you'll still have your own problems and now will have to help her deal with her's. Sure, it can be good when you help each other, but don't fret because you don't have one. Go on about your life and that will come naturally.

So I guess what I'm saying is:
1. Don't concentrate so much about which religion is the true one. Just do the right thing because it is right and feels good.

2. Find something that interests you. Pour yourself into something you're passionate about and you will feel fulfilled.

3. Don't worry about having a girlfriend or boyfriend. That will happen when it needs to. Besides, you'll be so busy living life you'll barely even notice until someone does come along.
